Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is the largest country in Southeast Asia Peninsular. It is bordered on the north and northeast by China and Tibet, on the east and southeast by Laos and Thailand, on the south by the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal and on the west by Bangladesh and India.
The country covers an area of 678,500 square kilometers where 657,740 square kilometer occupies the land and 20,760 square kilometers occupies the water. It is a land of hills and valleys and is rimmed in the north, east and west by mountain ranges forming a giant horseshoe.
The Republic of the Union of Myanmar has a population of over 60 million.
Myanmar is a union of 135 ethnic groups of which the main national races are Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Bamar, Mon, Rakhine and Shan.
The official language is Myanmar, but minority ethnic groups have their own languages. English is widely spoken and understood.
Over 85 percent of population is Theravada Buddhists. There are Christians, Muslims, Hindus and some animists.
For the majority of Myanmar’s population, Buddhism is the center of individual life whereas the monastery is the center of the community. Myanmar people try to live according to the basic five precepts of Buddhism in their daily activities.The people have preserved the traditions of close family ties, respect for the elders, reverence for Buddhism and simple native dress. Myanmar People are contented and cheerful even in the face of adversities and known for their simple hospitality and friendliness. The traditional garment of the Myanmar People is called longyi for both men and women.
Myanmarhas 3 main seasons. Hot season is from March to Maywith average temperatures of between 30-35°C, rainy season is from June to Octoberwith average temperature between 25-30°C and cold season is from November to Februarywith average temperatures of between 20-24°C.The tropical monsoon is usually cloudy, rainy, hot, humid summers and less cloudy, scant rainfall, mild temperatures, lower humidity during winter.
Myanmar is rich in natural resources such as petroleum, timber, tin, antimony, zinc, copper, tungsten, lead, coal, some marble, limestone, precious stones, natural gas, hydropower.
Myanmar local currency is the “Kyat” which is divided into 100 Pyas. Currency notes are available in denominations of Kyats 10000, Kyats 5000, Kyats 1000, Kyats 500, Kyats 200, Kyats 100, Kyats 50, Kyats 20, Kyats 10, Kyats 5, Kyat 1.
There are Authorized moneychangers in Yangon Airport, Banks and hotels who will exchange US$ into Kyat. But you can exchange other foreign currencies such as Euros, Singapore Dollar etc.
We recommend visitors to bring US Dollar in cash only for personal expenses such as, restaurant, shopping in Myanmar and etc.
Myanmar Standard Time (MST) is 6 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
Government offices open from 9:30 am to 16:30 pm on weekdays.
Banking hours are from 09:30 am to 15:00 pm.
Private companies work daily except Sunday and public holidays.
Clothing should be light, casual cotton wear, sandals or slippers are best for summer. A cardigan or light jerkin for winter and quick drying clothes and an umbrella are suitable during the rainy season.No footwear is allowed when visiting pagodas and monasteries.
GSM Mobile Telephones from other countries are unable to operate in Myanmar. Prepaid GSM SIM cards are available at Yangon International Airport, Myanmar Shopping Malls and mobile phone shops. One card cost – 20USD.
A valid passport with Entry visa is required for all tourists & businessmen. Tourist Visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. A Tourist Visa allows a stay of 28 days, extensible for an additional 4 weeks.Visa on arrival Permit can be done on prior basis for tourists from countries, where Myanmar Embassies do not exist.We would need passport number, passport date of issue, passport date of expire, nationality, occupation, address and two photos to apply visa on arrival permit.
