Bago, also known as Pegu, is 80 km far from Yangon and it is approximately 2 hrs drive which you can do day excursion from Yangon. Bago was founded in 573 AD and became the capital of Mon Kingdom in 1365 AD. It is located on the eastern bank of Bago River so it became an important seaport. However, King Alaungpaya destroyed the city in 1757. Although the next king who ruled the city rebuilt and restored the city, the river changed its course so the city was cut off from the river. Then it also lost its importance as a seaport. Now the city is filled with many blissed out Buddhas and gleaming temples.
