Amarapura is situated about 11 km south of Mandalay and literally meaning “City of Immortality”. Amarapura became a royal capital in early 18th century under King Bodawpaya of the Konbaung Dynasty.Many interesting things remain to be seen in Amarapura. Cotton and silk weaving is the main industry in Amarapura. The 150 year old Mahagandayon Monastery is a famous Buddhist learning center and home to a thousand monks. The 1208 meters U Bein Wooden Bridge connects the two side of the Taungthaman Lake and it is the longest teak bridge in the world.
